What is Second Unit Dwelling

A “second unit dwelling” also more commonly referred to as a “second unit”, a “accessory dwelling unit” (ADU),a “accessory apartment” and historically a “granny flat” – is described as an additional living quarters on a lot with an existing and primary single-family home that is both subordinate and independent of the primary single family home on the lot in which it’s based. A second unit dwelling may be attached or within the primary home but traditionally and as required by most building and safety codes the second unit dwelling must be in the rear of the primary home and smaller than the primary home.
