Pain Types

Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common problem that varies from acute injuries to medical complications. Knee pain can be highly localized or might be diffuse. For acute knee injury, rehabilitation therapies such as physiotherapy and other associated modalities may rectify the issue.

What are the major causes of knee injuries?

  • Injuries of the knee ligaments
  • Knee ligament sprains and tears are common sports injuries. These injuries can occur to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and medial or lateral collateral ligament (MCL/LCL). These injuries may require treatment with cortisone, PRF, or even surgery.

  • Tears in the knee cartilage
  • Tears in the cartilage of the knee are also common. Cartilage is a flexible and tough tissue that covers the end of your bones. Cartilage also comprises of the medial and lateral meniscus, Tears of the articular cartilage or meniscus sometimes requires surgery however non-operative management may be considered.

  • Arthritis of the Knee
  • Arthritis is probably the most common cause of knee pain and disability. Arthritis is a chronic degenerative condition that necessarily requires surgery.  Rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis and Osteoarthritis are the three most common types of arthritis in humans. In each of these conditions, common symptoms are stiffness accompanied with swelling.

Type of Arthritis:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Knee
  • This type of arthritis is an autoimmune disease that results in the tissue around the joint to get inflamed and thickened. Severe Chronic inflammation results into damage and loss of cartilage. It is relatively less frequent than the other types of arthritis.

  • Post-traumatic Arthritis
  • A severe knee injury might cause post-traumatic arthritis. Such an injury generally comprises of bone fractures and ligament tears. These injuries can damage the cartilage in your knee, eventually leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. This is a form of osteoarthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis of the Knee
This is the most frequently occurring type of arthritis. It eventually results in the progressive wearing of the cartilage in the knee joint. It is more frequent in individuals who are 50 and above. This condition causes pain, limited mobility, stiffness of the knee, swelling of the joint, tenderness, deformity and fragility. The major causes of osteoarthritis are age, weight, genetics, previous injuries, infections, and illness like a tumor. Osteoarthritis can also be a result of severe sports injuries.
